From about 30 to 19 BCE, Virgil, the Roman poet, wrote the Latin epic poem when Rome was going through chaos due to civil war. Augustus thought that the Roman, which had long been scarred by civil war, should be healed and reorganized. To establish peace in Rome, he had to remind Romes glorious past to put forward patriotism and present a vision for Romes future. To meet these demands of the times, Virgil wrote an epic poem that was the foundation of Roman mythology (britannica.com). The paper argues that Aeneas, who has to lay the cornerstone of the Roman Founding State on Italy, has set the new hero standard, pietas, and satisfied that standard, breaking away from the old Homeric hero values due to the three decisions throughout the story.
